Compare design choices on one basis
An energy balance connects envelope and ventilation losses with gains and building-use assumptions. It helps compare geometry, glazing, insulation and services scenarios consistently. Changing a parameter can affect another season: additional solar gains may reduce heating demand while increasing cooling requirements. A useful model exposes that interaction rather than treating each product improvement as an independent saving.
Give the inputs a revision history
The model needs areas, volumes, orientation, shading, assemblies, window properties and ventilation assumptions. Weather, indoor temperatures and occupancy also belong to the calculation. Identify values taken from drawings, manufacturer documentation and provisional assumptions. This distinction makes it possible to update the model correctly when the design changes instead of retaining inputs from an obsolete drawing set.
Interpret quantities within their boundaries
The output includes the calculation model, assumptions and comparison of agreed alternatives. Annual energy and peak power are not interchangeable; read results with units and accounting boundaries. Sensitivity to uncertain inputs can be more informative than a single headline number. A calculated estimate is not a measured future household bill, because actual occupancy, weather and operation may differ from the adopted scenario.
Carry the selected option into documents
Once an option is chosen, align its parameters with specifications, junctions and controls. Replacing glazing or a ventilation unit calls for an assessment of the changed inputs. Agree model format, detail and any supplementary calculations before work begins; certification is not an automatic outcome. In the enquiry, identify the decisions being compared and provide current plans and known envelope properties. This keeps the analysis tied to a decision that the project team can implement.
