Back up functions rather than a house label
Connectivity, well-water supply and refrigeration have different power and continuity needs. Begin with the consequences of each function stopping and its dependencies. A boiler may require a circulation pump, while internet service may depend on equipment outside the property. A critical-circuit list is often more informative for reserve selection than the floor area of the house.
Separate starting, duration and transfer
Motor starting demand differs from steady operation. Establish source power, stored energy and the acceptable interruption during transfer separately. Equipment that tolerates several seconds without supply may need a different arrangement from sensitive electronics. A runtime calculator cannot check voltage quality, transient behaviour or electrical compatibility between the source and connected appliances.
Plan for repeated interruptions
Batteries, generators and combined systems replenish their reserve differently. Charging time, fuel availability, servicing and the ability to supply ongoing demand while recovering reserve all affect usefulness. Generator location, exhaust management and carbon-monoxide protection are separate safety requirements; a generator must not operate in a dwelling or another enclosed space. Energy availability is only one part of the resilience problem.
Test with the intended loads
An agreed commissioning test should include the most demanding appliance start, transfer to reserve and return of the grid. The arrangement must prevent hazardous backfeed and provide appropriate protection in every operating mode. Hand over instructions, identified critical circuits and operating limits. Before discussing equipment, prepare a table of appliances, running power, duration and tolerated interruptions. It provides a basis for a testable scenario rather than a vague promise that everything will remain powered.
