Heating and cooling

Key questions: winter load, summer overheating and control.

Start with the room load

Heating replaces lost heat, while cooling removes excess gains. Design power in kW and seasonal energy in kWh describe different tasks. Floor area without envelope construction, ventilation and outdoor conditions is not enough to select equipment. Comfort also requires the load distribution between rooms, rather than only a single figure for the whole building.

Source and emitters work together

A heat pump, boiler or resistance heater must suit the temperatures required by radiators, underfloor circuits or an air system. Excess capacity can make low-load operation difficult. A heat pump's rated COP applies to specified conditions; seasonal performance depends on temperatures, controls, supplementary heating and associated equipment consumption. Comparing a single favourable operating point can therefore misrepresent the likely system behaviour.

Summer design begins with architecture

Shading, glazing area, orientation and internal gains influence cooling demand. Night ventilation helps only when outdoor conditions and available airflow are suitable. Active cooling also needs humidity assessment, condensate management and air distribution. A well-insulated envelope does not remove solar gains through large unshaded windows, so insulation alone cannot establish summer comfort.

Commissioning completes installation

After installation, check water or air flows, zone operation and interaction between thermostats. Occupants need an explanation of operating modes, not only a remote control. Bring plans, envelope information, intended temperatures and occupancy schedules to the discussion. The site's preliminary heat-loss tool illustrates the influence of assumptions; equipment selection requires a complete load calculation and coordinated system layout. Retain those inputs so that later changes to glazing or room use can be evaluated against the original design.
