Air Conditioning in a Passive House

Select air conditioning in a low-load home from the summer balance and humidity needs. Oversizing is not a universal comfort reserve.

Summer load

Assess solar and internal gains, envelope, ventilation and latent moisture load separately. Winter heating capacity does not automatically establish cooling capacity.

Modulation and distribution

Check minimum capacity, unit positions, air paths and closed doors. A hallway unit may not deliver the required conditions in every bedroom.

Dehumidification and condensate

Establish performance when sensible demand is low but dehumidification is needed. Drainage, cleaning access and leak protection belong in the installation design.

Passive measures and ventilation

External shading can reduce demand before equipment selection. An air conditioner generally recirculates air and does not replace designed outdoor-air ventilation.

Common mistakes

Do not select capacity solely by floor area or maximum datasheet output. Coordinate noise, electrical supply, maintenance, winter use and temperature operating limits.
