Classic, Plus and Premium distinguish energy targets that account for renewable energy. A higher class does not guarantee operation during a grid outage.
Why the classes exist
The classes connect low demand with renewable generation. Building quality comes first; adding generation does not repair poor construction details.
Classic
Classic is the baseline class in this system. It does not prohibit solar panels: installing panels alone does not establish Plus compliance.
Plus
Plus considers both renewable primary energy demand and generation under the PHI method. Comparing a utility meter with annual solar output is not enough.
Premium
Premium sets a more ambitious demand and generation balance. Assess available area, shading, system losses and the prescribed accounting method.
Understanding PER
PER is a renewable primary energy assessment, not simply electricity at the meter. It should not be confused with delivered energy or a utility bill.
Design implications
Compare the envelope, hot water, heating, cooling and household consumption alongside generation. Allow space for equipment and maintenance as well as panels.
Choosing a target
Compare options by added cost, feasibility and verification route. Treat backup power as a separate design involving storage, an inverter and critical loads.
