Building Compactness and Heat Loss

Compactness relates envelope area to volume or usable floor area. Less external surface can reduce heat transmission when other conditions are equal.

What is compared

State whether the metric is A/V or envelope area per floor area. Do not mix buildings measured with different area and volume conventions.

Thermal logic

Transmission through a plane depends on U × A × ΔT. Reducing A does not eliminate glazing, thermal bridges, airtightness or ventilation effects.

Shape and junctions

Projections, bays and complex roofs add junctions and can complicate construction. Assess detail access and structure without declaring every complex form unsuitable.

Comfort and seasons

A compact form should preserve daylight, practical layouts and summer protection. Winter savings do not justify dark rooms or uncontrolled solar gains.

Common mistakes

Comparing different usable areas or temperature zones gives misleading conclusions. Use the same room programme, climate and technical assumptions.
