Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery: How It Works

Heat recovery transfers heat between extract and supply air. Comfort also depends on ducts, balancing, acoustics and maintenance.

Supply and extract

Supply fresh air to occupied rooms and extract from designated rooms under the design. Provide transfer routes that work with internal doors closed.

Heat exchanger and filters

The exchanger reduces ventilation heat loss; filters protect the system and capture contaminants according to their class. Dirty filters change system resistance.

Ductwork and balancing

Sizes, bends and lengths affect pressure and noise. Measure and balance terminal airflows after installation rather than rely on the unit’s maximum rated flow.

Summer bypass

A bypass can route air around the exchanger under appropriate conditions. It is not refrigeration and cannot guarantee cooling when outdoor air is warmer.

Noise and condensate

Plan acoustic placement, appropriate velocities and accessible condensate drainage. Address frost protection according to the selected equipment.

Maintenance and limits

Leave access for filter changes and cleaning. Ventilation does not replace source control, a coordinated kitchen extraction strategy or required cooling.
