Roof airtight layers are often damaged during services and finishing work. They must be preserved as well as installed.
Boundary and material
Identify the barrier in the complete section and its wall connections. Obtain membrane properties and tape compatibility from the specific system documentation.
Joints and substrate
Dust, uneven surfaces and inaccessible corners can compromise connections. Follow documented preparation, laps and support rather than choosing an arbitrary tape width.
Service penetrations
Plan cable, lighting and ventilation routes early. Where feasible, provide a service zone to reduce later barrier penetrations.
Moisture and thermal boundary
Airtightness limits moisture transport by air but does not prevent roof leaks. Also assess rain control, insulation and drying routes.
Common mistakes and acceptance
Punctures after testing, undocumented repairs and uninspected concealed joints leave uncertainty. Track damage and recheck significant changes.
