A generator and battery address different parts of backup supply. Selection depends on outage duration, critical loads, installation space and the ability to restore reserves.
Energy and power
Check simultaneous loads and starting requirements separately from required kWh. Battery assessment needs usable discharge and efficiency; generator assessment needs permitted loading and fuel planning.
Short and long outages
A battery can provide quiet supply until its reserve is depleted. A generator requires starting, fuel and maintenance; charging a battery from it requires confirmed compatibility.
Exhaust and fire safety
Never operate a fuel generator inside a home, garage or other enclosed space. CPSC advises outdoor placement at least 20 feet, about 6 m, from the home with exhaust away from openings; this is the source’s safety guidance, not a Ukrainian regulation.
Installation and operation
Plan weather protection without trapping exhaust, safe fuel storage and cooling before refuelling. For a battery, check temperatures, BMS, ventilation and manufacturer installation requirements.
Common mistakes and transfer
Never backfeed supply through a household socket. Coordinated transfer, protection, earthing and any ATS must be designed for both modes; separately verify winter starting and recharge capability.
