Insulating a Ground-Bearing Floor

A ground-bearing floor needs coordinated support, insulation, moisture control and services. It should not be treated as an ordinary external wall.

Support and loads

Assess ground, preparation and structure using investigation data. Select floor insulation for actual loading conditions, not conductivity alone.

Heat transfer

Ground heat transfer depends on geometry and conditions. Adding layer resistances describes the build-up but is not a complete floor heat-loss assessment.

Foundation junction

Trace insulation at the edge to the plinth and wall. Assessing the central area does not assess the perimeter.

Water and services

Capillary breaks and waterproofing serve distinct functions. Coordinate pipes, penetrations and levels before covering; future access may be limited.

Common mistakes

Gaps, damaged boards, uncoordinated services and missing concealed-work records complicate acceptance. Check the complete assembly before concrete, not just insulation thickness.
