An insulated raft can combine the building foundation with continuous floor and perimeter insulation. Its suitability depends on ground conditions, loads, water, topography and coordinated details, rather than the technology’s name.
Foundations and floors interact with the ground but perform different tasks. The foundation carries loads, the floor provides usable space, and protective layers manage heat and moisture. Their interaction depends on ground information, levels, conditioned volume and structural arrangement. A label such as “warm slab” describes neither structural behaviour nor the complete thermal detail without those inputs.
A house without a basement, a heated basement and a cold service space have different thermal boundaries. Identify spaces included in the model and trace insulation to the plinth and wall. Ground heat transfer cannot simply be treated as the same arrangement as a flat wall exposed to outdoor air. Geometry, perimeter and the appropriate calculation method matter.
Waterproofing, surface drainage and subsoil drainage have different functions. Pipes and cables should be coordinated before concreting, retaining sealing and repair possibilities. Load-bearing insulation needs strength and deformation checks, not conductivity alone. A small drawing change can become difficult to implement once the foundation is complete and the relevant layers are inaccessible.
Start with the ground-floor or basement guide matching your building. Then examine the plinth connection, moisture, radon where relevant and service entries. Gather ground information, sections and levels before a project-specific discussion. The material helps formulate questions but cannot select a foundation type without inputs or replace structural calculations. Its purpose is to make the physical and documentary dependencies clear before irreversible work starts.
