Basement Inside or Outside the Thermal Envelope

A basement’s position relative to the thermal envelope determines insulation, doors and penetrations. Start from actual room use.

Temperature scenario

Compare heated use, plant-room use and unheated storage. A future use change may require envelope and ventilation changes rather than simply adding a heater.

Envelope boundary

For a heated basement, trace walls and floor; for an unheated one, trace the floor above and stair separation. Doors and penetrations must follow that boundary.

Water and soil gases

Waterproofing and drainage remain necessary considerations in either temperature regime. Penetration sealing matters, but radon performance is established by measurement, not joint appearance.

Details and equipment

Check plinths, stair openings, pipes and temperature-sensitive equipment. Services in an unheated zone may need separate protection measures.

Common mistakes

Do not leave an open air path between heated rooms and an unheated basement while modelling isolated zones. Ground and water data remain essential for structural design.
