Slope and basements connect architecture with soil, water and the thermal boundary. They cannot be assessed simply as extra floor area.
Site investigations
Obtain surveying, ground investigation and water and neighbouring-building information. No visible water during one visit does not establish seasonal or long-term conditions.
Warm or unheated basement
Define room operation and trace insulation and airtightness boundaries. Stairs, doors and service penetrations must follow that decision.
Water and structure
Coordinate earth retention, waterproofing, drainage and discharge routes. Insulation selection does not replace foundation or slope-stability assessment.
Light and operation
A partly exposed basement can receive daylight, but façades and light wells need individual details. Check ventilation, maintenance access and water-entry risks.
Common mistakes
Do not model a basement as unheated when it is used as living space without an appropriate envelope. Excavation near neighbours needs impact assessment, not merely a boundary plan.
