Strip Foundations in Energy-Efficient Homes

Strip foundations can form part of an efficient home when ground, loads, water control and thermal detailing are coordinated. Foundation type alone does not determine heat loss.

Ground and structure

The structural engineer determines geometry from investigation and loads. This guide does not specify depth, reinforcement or capacity.

Thermal envelope

Show how floor insulation meets the wall and plinth. A massive element between layers can create a heat path absent from a clear-floor calculation.

Water and drainage

Surface runoff, groundwater and capillary control are separate issues. Do not specify drainage without establishing discharge and maintenance arrangements.

Coordinate penetrations with structure and sealing before construction. Late drilling can damage the structure or control layers.
