Thermal Bridges at the Plinth: How to Avoid Them

The plinth connects foundation, floor and wall. Coordinate structural support, thermal continuity and water protection at this junction.

Junction geometry

Check ground, floor and façade levels on one section. A small level change can expose insulation edges or alter drainage paths.

Structural and thermal tasks

Thermal improvement must not compromise support. Selecting loaded materials and foundations remains a structural task informed by ground conditions.

Water and materials

Assess splashback, ground contact, impact and waterproofing. A façade insulation product is not automatically suitable for the plinth.

Calculation and entries

Assess heat flow and surface temperature for a significant bridge. Service entries need separate seals and must not undermine the coordinated detail.

Common mistakes

Gaps between floor and façade insulation, exposed edges and backfilling before inspection complicate repairs. Photograph concealed layers with location references.
