Direct electric heating is simple at appliance level, but suitability depends on heat demand, available electrical capacity and operating cost.
Demand before selection
First assess design heat load and annual demand. Equal floor areas can need different capacities because of envelope, climate and ventilation.
Comparison with a heat pump
A resistance heater converts electricity to heat, whereas a heat pump moves heat. Cost comparison requires seasonal heat-pump operation at specified temperatures, a tariff scenario and maintenance.
Electrical system
Check contracted capacity and simultaneous heating, hot water and appliance demand. Protection, cable sizes, circuit grouping and load management belong in the electrical design.
Backup and comfort
Heating can quickly exhaust a battery intended only for critical appliances. Consider building inertia, acceptable temperature decline and a separate extended-outage scenario.
Common mistakes
Low appliance cost does not prove low total cost. Do not transfer another project’s tariff or payback without its assumptions; assess summer cooling and ventilation separately.
