Panoramic Glazing in an Energy-Efficient Home: Where Is the Limit?

Winter performance

Compare the whole window’s Uw and installation detail rather than glazing Ug alone. Large areas can increase transmission and affect local comfort beside the glass.

Summer performance

Orientation, g-value and external shade govern solar gains. Equal areas on different façades have different time profiles and need seasonal assessment.

Daylight and privacy

Assess useful daylight, glare and curtain use. Glazing kept covered because of overheating or privacy may fail its intended purpose.

Structure and installation

Large units need weight, support, movement and delivery checks. Coordinate thresholds, drainage and shading before ordering, including repair access.

Common mistakes

Do not compensate for excessive glazing solely with larger air conditioning without assessing alternatives. Compare smaller area, different placement and controllable shading for the same room brief.
