Select external shading for the façade and operating pattern. Shutters, louvres and overhangs have different capabilities and limits.
Solar geometry
An overhang responds to sun altitude and window geometry; low morning or evening sun needs a different assessment. One standard projection cannot work equally on every orientation.
Controllable options
Louvres and shutters allow adjustment but affect daylight, views and window use. Agree manual control, automation and power-loss behaviour.
Fixings and envelope
Boxes, guides and brackets can cross insulation and air barriers. Check structural support, drainage and motor replacement without damaging the façade.
Weather limits
Check wind, snow and temperature conditions against product documentation. If controls retract shading in wind, include that state in summer comfort assessment.
Common mistakes
Do not equate external shading with an internal blind without thermal assessment. Preserve required exits and access; maintenance and cleaning must remain possible.
