Insulation Thickness: Why 'More Is Better' Is Not the Whole Answer

More insulation lowers one-dimensional heat transfer under unchanged conditions. The building’s optimum also depends on junctions, geometry, cost and summer operation.

Physical effect

Layer resistance rises with thickness while assembly U-value varies inversely with total resistance. Equal thickness increments therefore do not produce equal absolute U-value reductions.

Building rather than fragment

After improving walls, other losses may become a larger share. Assess windows, ventilation and bridges in the same balance.

Details and buildability

Thickness affects reveals, eaves, fixings and usable dimensions. The geometry must be buildable without gaps or exposed edges.

Moisture, air and durability

Insulation does not replace airtightness or water control. Assembly changes may need renewed hygrothermal and façade-system assessment.

Common mistakes

Selecting solely for maximum R ignores budget, bridges and services. Do not claim payback without agreed costs, energy scenarios and maintenance assumptions.
