Reinforced Concrete in the Thermal Envelope: Thermal Bridge Risks

A reinforced-concrete element can cross insulation and create a heat-flow bypass. Structural and thermal requirements need coordinated design.

Structural function

Slabs, columns and beams transfer loads under the structural design. Insulation must not be introduced by arbitrarily interrupting concrete or reinforcement; a structural engineer must assess the detail.

Thermal boundary

Trace where the element crosses the conditioned boundary. Show continuous insulation or a dedicated solution on the drawings rather than assuming it exists.

Junction model

Assess geometry and temperature fields at balconies, slab edges and supports. One-dimensional layer resistance does not represent the bypass path.

Moisture and airtightness

Internal surface temperature affects local moisture risk. Joints, cracks and penetrations also need separate air and water control.

Common mistakes

Ignoring slab edges, partially insulating parapets or substituting a photograph for an assessment conceals risk. Check actual thicknesses and positions before finishes.
