Automatic Backup Switching: ATS and Control Scenarios

An ATS transfers between sources according to defined logic. The device alone cannot guarantee correct earthing, protection or uninterrupted supply.

System architecture

Define sources, critical circuits and permitted states. Grid, generator and inverter need coordinated interaction and prevention of unintended backfeed.

Transfer conditions

Define grid-failure criteria, delays, backup readiness and return conditions. Loads tolerate different interruptions; sensitive equipment may need a different arrangement.

Protection in both modes

Electrical design must verify shock, short-circuit and overload protection for each source. This article specifies no neutral arrangement, cabling or device ratings.

Failures and manual control

Consider communication loss, failed starting and an unavailable battery. Manual operation and instructions should be clear and prevent incompatible simultaneous states.

Acceptance and mistakes

Test agreed transfers with critical loads, not only no-load starting. Record settings, results and maintenance procedures; automation without scenario tests remains unverified.
